The Horse Adjutant is the wartime story of Leon Schagrin who was 12 years old when the Nazis invaded and occupied his hometown of Grybow in southern Poland. Leon grew up with his father who was a self-trained veterinarian, caring for local livestock. This placed him in close contact with horses from an early age. The skills he learned provided him with something of value to the Nazis and put him at the center of some of their most infamous crimes.
Meanwhile, Leon's family, four sisters and a baby brother, along with his father and mother, 200 cousins and the entire region of Southern Poland were sent to the extermination camp at Belzec where over 600,000 people were killed in a single year!
Leon survived as a laborer in a quarry until he was sent to the ghetto at Tarnow where as youth driver of a horse carriage he became the preferred driver of Hauptsturmführer Blache, the Nazi Commandant of Tarnow ghetto and witnessed the extermination of the ghetto. He, himself, was rescued from a mass grave and sent to another concentration camp at Szebnia where he continued working with horses. After a short stay in Szebnia Leon was stripped and shipped naked and with hundreds of other Jews in cattle cars to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Surviving the selection he was assigned to work in the Buna Camp youth section of the IG Farben industrial plant. In an air raid bombing of the plant he was wounded in the neck. Hos wound allowed him to remain at the camp when it was evacuated allowing him to escape the death march. In this weakened condition he survived 10 days with no food until the Russian Army liberated the camp in 1945.
At each location Leon was both victim and witness to the Nazi Holocaust. His story is filled with dramatic instances of degradation, humanity and the kindness of strangers that kept him alive.

This true account of Leon Schagrin’s struggle to survive after the Nazi’s took over Poland is more than heartbreaking; it is gut-wrenching, It is so immediate and real that I found it hard to read much of the book at a time.Leon was just 12-years old when the German Nazis took over Grybow, his hometown. He survived, whereas the rest of his family was exterminated at the Belzec concentration camp.
Leon survived not only because he was skilled at taking care of the Nazis’ horses. He survived because of the acts of kindness of a few people who had the courage to do what was right.
The story is incredible, brutal, disturbing, and very moving. Although I had read many accounts of the Holocaust, previously, this book made a lasting impression on me.

The Horse Adjutant A boy life in the Nazi Holocaust eBook Leon Schagrin Stephen Shooster Jim Boring Reviews
This was an extremely moving story. I have read many books and accounts of the Holocaust but this is the only start-to-finish account I have ever read of the life of an actual survivor, and as such it is uniquely valuable. What Leon Schagrin went through simply staggers the mind. I also cannot imagine what would make people so insanely cruel. For example, in one horrific scene, Leon is beaten unconscious with a stick and has his teeth knocked out by the concentration camp "blockleiter" for the "crime" of smuggling a few potato peels. But there were also stories of incredible courage and valor, such as that of Leon's family's neighbors in their small Polish village, and other non-Jews who helped Leon to survive. So amidst the unspeakable horror, we are reminded that there are decent and brave people everywhere. Above all, I would call this an inspiring (if painful) book.
I've read numerous books on the Holocaust but "The Horse Adjutant A Boy's Life in the Nazi Holocaust" stands head & shoulders above the vast majority of them. This is for a variety of reasons - most notably the powerful testimony of Leon Schagrin and the excellent & helpful editing/commentary/writing/etc. of Stephen Schooster. They provide numerous maps, photos, charts, introductions, etc. that really helps make the history come alive and allow the reader to delve much deeper into the moving narrative.
Leon is a survivor in every sense of the word and this book should be considered mandatory reading for anyone & everyone who is interested in learning about what happened during one of the darkest period of the 20th Century. Moreover, it offers compelling evidence that in spite of such darkness, one can emerge still filled with light and hope for humanity.
Took me awhile to get into this book. Well worth the read! I reading love the World War II books.
It was very in depth and informitive
I was made aware of this book on Facebook by a friend of mine from high school. I have read many books about the Holocaust - and this is probably the one that will stay with me...Leon was a child when he was taken to the camps - and he shares his story in a direct and matter of fact way - that really hits hard. As always, we all need to stay aware of the heartbreak of what happened to the Jews...this could happen to any and all of us. I would encourage this as reading for high school students and for anyone who wants to really understand how difficult this was.
A great book that I could hardly put down. Reliving a horrific period such as the one Mr. Schagrin survived had to have been extremely difficult, but I am so thankful he did. I'd love to see this as required reading in school as it makes the Holocaust come alive.
The only thing that needs work is the format of the digital version; there were errors which made it difficult to separate notes under pictures and text from the book.
Over the years I've seen and read a number of holocaust accounts but this is the first time I read a survivor's story from before to after the war. Leon was only 12 years old when the war came to his town and was 18 when freed from the camps. He was very lucky on many occasions and is one of the very few survivors from his town in Poland. Almost all the families he knew growing up including his own were totally wiped out.
Although heart wrenching, the facts of the situations are so unbelievable that I became numb and it was hard to relate this story to real life.
I'm very happy I read this book because I know have a MUCH better understanding of the holocaust and it's effect on familes and individuals.
What a waste of humans. We all need to keep aware of what is going on around us and not turn a blind eye when someone is persecuted.
